Hunchback 96 (also known as "Rampart Rampage" for some reason) is a sort-of remaking of Hunchback which itself was a remaking of the original BBC Micro game. This game is more of a homage than a remake although it does include many similarities. The object is the same, get to the end of the level by jumping over obstacles.Hunchback '96 is a DOS platform game released in 1996, and it is an unofficial sequel or reimagining of the original Hunchback arcade game, which was initially released in 1983. While it shares the same core idea and inspiration, Hunchback '96 features updated graphics and gameplay elements suited for the mid-1990s, offering a more modern (for the time) platforming experience. Game Overview: Story and Setting: Hunchback '96 takes place in the familiar setting of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, where you play as Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bell ringer, who must navigate through various levels to rescue Esmeralda and overcome the challenges that await him. The game follows a similar narrative to the original Hunchback, with Esmeralda being held captive, and Quasimodo must complete several platforming challenges to save her. While the plot is inspired by Victor Hugo's classic story, the game takes creative liberties, focusing on platforming action rather than the deeper narrative. Gameplay: Platforming Action: The core gameplay is similar to the original Hunchback game. You control Quasimodo as he jumps across various platforms, dodges obstacles, and avoids enemies while making your way through different levels. Hunchback '96 introduces new levels and challenges, with improved controls, smoother gameplay, and more complex stage designs compared to the 1983 version. As in the original game, the goal is to reach the end of each level, save Esmeralda, and defeat the various enemies that stand in your way. Obstacles and Hazards: Players must overcome numerous hazards, such as fire pits, spikes, and moving platforms, while avoiding falling or taking damage from enemies. New enemies and environmental hazards are introduced, adding variety to the challenges faced by the player. Power-ups: The game features power-ups, such as shields and extra lives, to help Quasimodo survive longer. Collecting these power-ups becomes crucial as the game progresses, as the difficulty increases with each level. Multilevel Gameplay: Each stage of Hunchback '96 is more intricate, featuring multiple layers of platforms and obstacles, giving players a chance to explore different parts of each level. The levels have a larger scope compared to the original, making for a more engaging and complex experience.
